I love music. I can't live without it.
As a matter of fact, I'd rather have music on all day than television. As much as I love movies, there's something about music that hits my soul, and since MTV no longer plays cool music videos, the television is turned off more than the computer. These days, I'm addicted to Spotify- on my cell phone and PC. I'm also a huge fan of theiHeart Radio show, Sixx Sense (save that opinion for another blog!).
As much as I love music, I do not dance, at least, not anymore. Sometimes I miss it- but obviously not enough. I run, I practice yoga, that's enough.
But more importantly, I'm shocked I'm not investing time learning how to play the guitar. It is seriously my favorite instrument, and if you ask me what my favorite genre of music is, the real answer is rock and roll and country. Why? Because, it involves a lot of guitar. Heavy guitar, bass and acoustic guitar.
Confession, when I hear a song with strong guitar I tendto... move my hand. Kind of like a guitarist. I've hit my steering wheel so many times. Other times, my hand hits my thigh. Have I denied myself the right to be a talented guitarist?
I've attempted to learn before, and failed. How do I have more patience to learn to run six miles, but, no patience to learn to play my favorite songs on a guitar?
When I was a teenager, I wrote to Santa Clause every Christmas asking for a guitar. I never got one. Not even a cheap used one from Kmart or Bradlees, or Ames. Or Toy's R Us. We didn't have Walmarts or Targets when I was a teen, I digress.
So, a goal I have set to reach before my fortieth birthday is to try to learn to play the guitar. If only to get some rhythm in my life. If only to understand some chords, and strumming.
I've attempted to learn for the past week -I've held the strings with the fingertips, and strummed the strings. I have a few months left. How far will I get? What songs will I learn- is it even realistic to expect to learn a song?
In running, you can say you'll run six miles and you reach six miles. You just need to say it, then get out there and run further each day. Andeveryday - you get closer to six miles. You learn one, two and then three miles out, then you learn four, and five and then six.
So should I apply my running mentality to guitar playing? Because when you learn to run, you have to get through the aches and pains in your feet, ankles, shins, hips and back... And any other muscle. But, when you play the guitar, you will have short, ugly finger nails and calloused fingertips. I'm cool with that.
If you tell me you want to run six miles before February, I know I can help you reach that goal.
If I tell you that I want to learn how to play, say, "Every Rose HasIts Thorn by Poison ," or- "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, before February, how close do you think I'll get?
